Eventually, Sakuta goes to the school library to relax; and unexpectedly spotting Mai Sakurajima wearing a bunny girl outfit as she wanders between the stacks. She is a famous actress who is currently on professional hiatus, and is also his senpai at school. At first he assumes it’s a joke or cosplay, but he soon notices something strange: no one else seems to notice her; fellow students pass by as if Mai were invisible.

Sakuta approaches her and speaks to her, demonstrating that he can indeed perceive her perfectly. Mai, suspicious and annoyed, admits that for some time now she feels like people "stop noticing her existence," even when she's wearing normal clothes. Sakuta, intrigued, starts accompanying her to see for himself.

Sakuta, initially skeptical but intrigued, accompanies her around to test the phenomenon. Over the course of the episode he witnesses evidence that others truly do not perceive Mai. They go to the cafeteria and Mai sits across from him; the waitress only recognizes Sakuta and is surprised that he orders two things. The conversation reveals that Mai has noticed for some time that people are no longer noticing her, as if her existence is fading away.

By episode’s end Sakuta offers to help and investigate the cause; their encounter forms the basis of a fragile rapport. The episode closes by setting up the show’s central premise: Sakuta is one of the few who can see and help those affected by this strange “Adolescence Syndrome”, and he commits to supporting Mai.

  • Mai: "Forget what you saw today. Also, don't have anything to do with me under any circumstances. If you understand, then say yes."
  • Sakuta: "I feel having two friends is more than enough. I just have to be friends with them for the rest of my life."
  • Sakuta: "A rumor is kind of like the atmosphere, isn't it? Since lately, the atmosphere is something you need to read. That "atmosphere" that labels you as a bad person if you can't read it. And the people creating that atmosphere don't have a sense of participation, so it's foolish to try to fight against the atmosphere."
  • Mai: "Stop with that "Senpai" thing. I don't recall ever becoming your senpai."
  • Mai: "Wh-Why are you stripping? You said you weren't going to do anything! Filthy! Perverted! Exhibitionist!"
  • Kaede: "So sorry! If you we're going to call for a professional lady delivered to you, please say so in advance!"
  • Rio: "Nothing less from you, Azusagawa. Such a rascal."
  • Sakuta: "May 6th. I met a wild bunny girl. This was the beginning. This is how we met. There's no way I can forget. You must remember, even if you forget. Be sure to do a good job, future me."
