N/A Light Novel Volume 2

Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai (青春ブタ野郎はバニーガール先輩の夢を見ない, Seishun Buta Yarō wa Banīgāru Senpai no Yume o Minai) is the first volume of the Seishun Buta Yarou light novel series.

Synopsis[]

Bunny girls do not live in libraries. This is simply common sense. And yet, that's exactly where Sakuta finds one in the wild. More bewildering is who the bunny girl is: Mai Sakurajima, a girl one year older than Sakuta, famous at their school for her acting career even though she's currently on break. To top it all off, it seems like no one else in the library can see Mai at all, no matter what she does or...wears. Wanting to find out more about this mystery and maybe get a little closer to this beautiful upperclassman in the process, Sakuta launches an investigation to discover why an unforgettable bunny girl keeps becoming totally invisible.

Story Notes[]

  • Sakuta Azusagawa encounters Mai Sakurajima dressed in a bunny girl outfit at his local library. He is the only one who can see her.
  • The following day after school, on the train journey home, Sakuta learns from Mai that more and more people are unable to see her.
  • Sakuta suggests that Adolescence Syndrome is the cause, and leads Mai to his apartment to show photos of his younger sister Kaede, who had her own case of Adolescence Syndrome.
  • Mai storms out of the apartment after hearing Sakuta bring up her manager at work.
  • Over the following days, Sakuta consults Rio Futaba for a potential explanation of Mai's syndrome.
  • At his part-time job at a diner, Sakuta serves a reporter named Fumika Nanjou who tries to learn more about the "hospitalization incident" that affected Sakuta - they eventually strike a deal that has Sakuta know more about Mai's decision to quit acting.
  • Unable to buy food for herself, Mai waits for Sakuta outside his apartment. After they buy groceries together, Sakuta brings up the incident that caused Mai to quit acting, which angers Mai. When Mai finds out how Sakuta knew, she calls Fumika and asks her not to publish Sakuta's scars, in return announcing her acting comeback through a new agency.
  • On the weekend, Sakuta goes on a date with Mai, but is late due to an incident involving another girl which was seen by police.
  • Despite his lateness, Mai waits for Sakuta anyway, and they go to where Mai had scheduled a meeting with her mother and previous agent. However, Mai's mother doesn't see or remember her daughter, and leaves after a stern exchange with Sakuta.
  • As more and more people forget Mai, including Fumika herself, Sakuta offers to elope as far as possible with Mai until someone sees her. They make it as far away as Ōgaki in Gifu Prefecture and spend a night at a hotel there.
  • Unable to sleep, Sakuta calls his friends, Yuuma and Rio, and finds out that they still remember Mai. After Mai wakes up in the morning, they return to their usual school and find that even the students there are beginning to forget Mai.
  • Sakuta continues to stay awake for Mai's sake, while also writing down a note to help him remember. When Mai has a clue about what Sakuta was trying to do, she brings Sakuta back to his own home and tutors him.
  • Sakuta starts to lose consciousness after his coffee is spiked with a sleeping pill Mai had slipped in. Mai leaves after Sakuta falls asleep.
  • Sakuta wakes up the next day unaware of what happened the night before. Before his final exam at school, he receives a note from Rio, who is herself unaware that she wrote the note.
  • During the exam, Sakuta suddenly begins to remember Mai, and runs out of the classroom and into the school yard to loudly declare his love for Mai.
  • Mai suddenly reappears and slaps Sakuta, though with all the students in witness, dismisses the "hospitalization incident" rumors about Sakuta.
