Rascal Does Not Dream of a Girlfriend (青春ブタ野郎はガールフレンドの夢を見ない) is the fourteenth volume of the Seishun Buta Yarou Light Novel series.

Synopsys[]

The day Sakuta dreamed about has arrived. Is his search for Touko Kirishima at an end? On stage in front of a live audience, Mai makes a major announcement.

So begins the final act of this curious story of adolescence.[2]

Story Notes[]

  • On April 1, Sakuta Azusagawa is with Ikumi Akagi as they make their way to a music festival where Mai Sakurajima would be performing.
  • Sakuta appears to spot different versions of Mai that nobody else can see. He ends up chasing after them and leaving Ikumi behind. He finds what he perceives to be the correct version of Mai, and wishes her good luck before returning to Ikumi.
  • After Mai's performance of a Touko Kirishima song, she declares that she is Touko Kirishima. Ikumi suddenly receives a message, seemingly from another Sakuta, that suggests that reality is being rewritten.
  • When Sakuta gets home, and over the following days, he notices the following changes:
    • The dissociated Kaede is living at his apartment, at the same time as the original Kaede at her parent's home. The dissociated Kaede is about to start her senior year at Minegahara High School having joined an Animal Club there, and had made friends.
    • Rio Futaba is Yuuma Kunimi's girlfriend. Yuuma had split from Saki Kamisato two years prior.
    • Sweet Bullet had a live performance at the Budokan on April 1, and have further dates booked. Uzuki Hirokawa had never dropped out of uni to go solo, because Sakuta had encouraged her not to.
    • Tomoe Koga is about to start her first year at the same uni as Sakuta. Her friend Nana Yoneyama is joining her.
    • Kento Yamada and Juri Yoshiwa, cram school students under Sakuta's direct tutelage, are dating each other.
    • Sara Himeji is still working at the diner part-time alongside Tomoe and Sakuta. She and Tomoe are now unaware of the "#dreaming" trend.
    • Nene Iwamizawa and Takumi Fukuyama had never split up. When Sakuta calls them over the phone, Nene insists that Mai is Touko Kirishima.
    • Ikumi's contact number is different.
    • Saki, who is still friends with Ikumi, refuses to explain why she split from Yuuma.
  • With no more leads to fall back on, Shoko Makinohara, who is set to begin her first year at Minegahara High School, appears to Sakuta.
  • Shoko gives driving directions to a cemetery in Shizuoka Prefecture, where she and Sakuta visit the grave of the true Touko Kirishima.
  • Touko was run over by a car several years ago on Christmas Eve, and became the donor of Shoko's heart.
  • Touko's mother happened to be in attendance as well - she invites Shoko and Sakuta to her home, where they see Touko's room.
  • Sakuta recognizes Miori Mitou from pictures of Touko with a friend, confirming that Touko was Miori's lost friend. Touko's mother gives away a diary of letters that Touko wrote before her death.
  • Miori begins to distance herself from Sakuta as a result of him learning the truth - that Miori sang Touko Kirishima's songs and uploaded them under Touko's name.
  • Miori admitted that her reality had been changing ever since she uploaded Touko's final song on Christmas Eve.
  • After Sakuta and Rio agree that Miori hasn't properly grieved for Touko, Shoko calls to inform of a discovery in the lyrics of Touko's final song.
