Light Novel Volume 14 |
Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dear Friend (青春ブタ野郎はディアフレンドの夢を見ない) is the fifteenth and last volume of the Seishun Buta Yarou Light Novel series.
Synopsis[]
A somewhat mysterious youth story that concludes with dignity.
"I'm glad I met you."
When Miori comes into contact with the truth about Touko Kirishima, Sakuta is also forced to make a decision... Sakuta and the Last Puberty Syndrome, the fifteenth installment of the series.[2]
Story Notes[]
- Sakuta manages to get Miori Mitou to meet with Shoko Makinohara, the current bearer of Touko Kirishima's heart, at Shichirigahama Beach.
- Shoko had written the lyrics to "Turn the World Upside Down", Touko's final song, in the sand. She gets Miori to read the lines from bottom to top, which changes the meaning of the song and finally causes Miori to grieve for Touko.
- Sakuta then drives Miori and Shoko to the venue where Mai Sakurajima was preparing to perform as Touko Kirishima. Sakuta and Shoko convince Mai to have Miori perform as Touko Kirishima instead.
- After Miori's performance, Mai faints. She quickly regains consciousness and informs Sakuta that she will clear up the misunderstanding.
- Sakuta and Miori visit Enoshima Island and talk more about Touko. At the end of the day, Miori returns home by herself, taking public transport.
- After Sakuta notices that he is still in the changed reality, he receives a call to his landline from Ikumi Akagi.
- Sakuta meets with Ikumi at the agreed location late at night. He finds out that he had agreed to meet the alternate-reality Ikumi. The alternate-reality Sakuta, wearing a bunny mascot outfit and keeping his face hidden, is also with Ikumi, and addresses Sakuta directly.
- Sakuta rejects his alternate counterpart's theories regarding Adolescence Syndrome. After Ikumi and the alternate-reality Sakuta confirm the time, they remind original-reality Sakuta that it is his birthday. They then disappear when Mai's car approaches.
- In the morning, Mai drives Sakuta to college, and hears about what Sakuta had been told by the bunny mascot. Later on campus, Mai confirms that she can no longer observe Miori.
- Mai excuses herself to go to her lecture. Miori then reveals that a bunny mascot told her to board a specific late-night train later that day, and wants Sakuta to see her off.
- After briefly talking to Nodoka Toyohama, Uzuki Hirokawa, Takumi Fukuyama and Nene Iwamizawa during the day, Sakuta gets the idea to visit the Fujisawa library where he saw Mai for the first time. There, he encounters the backpack-wearing Mai.
- Sakuta goes with the backpack-wearing Mai to places where he remembers events from the previous timeline, including the Benten Bridge crossing where Mai died.
- Once the sun sets, the backpack-wearing Mai disappears. Sakuta goes to the diner where Kaede Azusagawa is working, then encounters Tomoe Koga on his way to cram school.
- At cram school, Sakuta's brief exchanges with both Rio Futaba and Sara Himeji confirm that he is still in the changed reality.
- Just before leaving cram school, Sakuta encounters Shoko again and learns that she was inspired to study medicine.
- On the way to an electronics store, Sakuta encounters the dissociated Kaede, who is buying a birthday present for him. The dissociated Kaede is determined to return to her reality, having learned that the Kaede in Sakuta's reality had already been cured of her dissociative disorder.
- At the electronics store, Sakuta buys a phone for himself, and uses it to call Mai. He ends up having to leave a voicemail, but Mai fortunately texts back.
- At Fujisawa station, the alternate-reality versions of Ikumi and Sakuta await, having arrived before Miori. Once Miori arrives, all four of them take the same train departing at 22:50.
- Miori reveals that she also bought a phone - the same model as Sakuta's. They exchange numbers. Sakuta then disembarks from the train at Shichirigahama station, where the backpack-wearing Mai was waiting.
- Sakuta talks briefly with the backpack-wearing Mai, then says he's not alone, and watches the younger Mai get on the next train that calls.
- Sakuta meets with the correctly-aged Mai at Shichirigahama beach, and finally reveals his plans for the future. Mai wishes Sakuta a happy birthday just before it turns midnight. They hold hands and watch the sky together.
- Two years later in the restored reality:
- Sakuta begins training to be a teacher during his final year of college, at Minegahara High School.
- Shoko, in her final year at Minegahara High School, is revealed to be president of the Animal Club there.
- Mai defers a year of college to focus on her acting career.
- Rio has accepted a date with Toranosuke.
- Sara has joined the same college as Tomoe.
- Sweet Bullet realize their dream of performing at the Budokan.
- Nodoka has learned how to drive, and offers to give Sakuta and Kaede a ride to college.
- Kaede and her friend Kotomi Kano are also studying at Yokohama City University.
- Takumi plans to take up a data analyst role at the TV station in Hokkaido where his already-graduated girlfriend Nene is working as a reporter.
- Sakuta's memories and experiences of Adolescence Syndrome are intact - he offers to counsel a second-year student at Minegahara High School over her insecurities of seeing things no-one else can see.
- Although Miori is nowhere to be seen, Sakuta mistakes a stranger on the train for her.
