Rascal Does Not Dream of a Sister Home Alone (青春ブタ野郎はおるすばん妹の夢を見ない, Seishun Buta Yarō wa Orusuban Imōto no Yume o Minai) is the fifth volume of the Seishun Buta Yarou light novel series.
Synopsis[]
Sakuta has received a letter from his first love, Shouko, asking to meet on the beach. Obviously, now that he's dating Mai, this puts him in a very strange place. Even more surprising is that his homebound sister is determined to return to school! Will she finally graduate from staying at home-and from her beloved brother?
Story Notes[]
- Sakuta consults with Rio Futaba about the letter he found that was written by Shoko Makinohara. Rio relays his concerns in a text to Mai, who goes to Rio's chemistry lab and enters just as Rio leaves.
- At the end of school, Kaede's old friend Kotomi Kano finds Sakuta. Sakuta goes with Kotomi to a café to talk more about Kaede while Mai waits for Shoko at the beach.
- Shoko doesn't arrive, so when Sakuta returns to Mai, he writes a message in the sand before returning home.
- Upon his return home, Kaede announces to Sakuta her goals to reach by the end of the year, which includes going to school.
- After Kaede successfully answers the landline, she passes out with a fever.
- Kaede recovers on the following day to attempt her nine-step plan of leaving home. She succeeds with the help of Sakuta.
- Kaede covers more distance away from home over the next few days until one day at the beach, Kotomi encounters her. Kaede doesn't know who Kotomi is - at this point, Sakuta reveals the truth about Kaede.
- Kaede's dissociation from two years ago is revisited, as well as Sakuta's attempts to reach out to the dissociated Kaede and how he subsequently met Shoko for the first time afterwards.
- The day after Kotomi's fateful encounter, Sakuta hands over a book that the pre-dissociation Kaede let Kotomi borrow. It has a hand-written note from Kotomi inside. Kaede reads the note and passes out.
- After Kaede is discharged from hospital, Sakuta lets his father know of Kaede's desire to return to school. At around the same time, the set for Mai's new movie moves to Kanazawa.
- Two days later, Sakuta and his father meet with Miwako Tomobe, a counsellor from Kaede's old school. Sakuta then leads Miwako herself to his apartment for one-on-one counselling with Kaede.
- Over the next few days, Kaede attempts to go to school, but fails each time, the last attempt overwhelming her such that she cries. Sakuta offers to skip school by taking Kaede somewhere else - a zoo. After leaving the zoo, Sakuta gives Kaede an annual pass for the zoo so that she can visit whenever she likes.
- On their return home, Sakuta diverts from the usual path to lead Kaede to the junior high school that she would be going to. They sneak in and Kaede has a look inside her classroom.
- The next day, however, Kaede wakes up in her pre-dissociation self. Kaede is rushed to hospital again, and her father cries tears of joy at her return. Sakuta instead rushes out of hospital and suddenly bleeds from his chest again.
- The older Shoko appears before Sakuta again. She walks Sakuta home and prepares a bath for him. While outside the bathroom, Shoko begins to read the dissociated Kaede's diary entries.
- On the day Kaede is discharged, she voices her desire to return to school. Later that day, Mai visits Sakuta's apartment to check on him, but sees the older Shoko already living with him.
